Blown Engine...

Now that I have unfortunately discovered that the engine is blown with damage on the Cylinder wall between Cylinder 1 and Cylinder 2 I have to decide what to do about it. I spoke to a local engine builder (Head Torque) and he started out convinced that it would be fixable but once I got him to actually come and have a look he was not as hopeful. Below I have captured some more photos of the damage.





I then managed to find another engine builder (BM Autohaus), through a contact over at BM Techniks, who worked specifically with BMW engines. He was more confident that it could be fixed by sleeving the motor before rebuilding. Unfortunately his price was quite high for what would otherwise be a completely stock rebuild and I do not particularly like the idea of sleeving high revving motors. So again I was basically left with a useless hunk of motor.


I have decided to start looking for a second hand motor or watch out for full E46 M3 wreck's at auction where I could salvage the motor and part out the rest.

Mishimoto Cooling Upgrade Order

As the car had done ~94k miles I thought it would be time to refresh the cooling system as part of the build project. It also gave me an opportunity to remove the viscous clutch fan, as I have never liked these. Purple Tag Steering Rack

Given the age of the car and the condition of the steering rack I decided that I should investigate a rebuild or upgrade. My research brought me to a great thread over at M3Forum written by forum member Volke -  Comprehensive Steering Information Thread  (updated to NAM3Forum link). It seems as though the dead feeling I had been experiencing on my stock rack was due to the progressive nature of the stock E46 M3 rack. An "upgrade" or remedy to this would be the CS/CSL steering rack, E46 330i steering rack or a few options from the Z cars. MK60 DSC Module Identification

While waiting for my engine and ECU to be delivered I thought I would try and confirm if I have a MK60 DSC Module. This would allow me to enable M-Track Mode (CSL style DSC) through INPA when I get the car back together. Firstly I had to try figure out my modules serial / part number. Unfortunately this is very hard to do with the unit installed but I really didn't want to disassemble it... despite the fact the rest of the car is in pieces... To do this I used and Inspection Mirror and my camera to take a photo of the back of the unit where the identification information is. As you can see from the picture (although inverted by the mirror), I have a 10.0960-0813.3 unit. Next I did a bit of research on the MK60 DSC Module.
